It's also interesting if you are particularly into Remedy's previous games, specifically Max Payne 2. I like American Nightmare but I agree it's probably not worth playing unless you really get into Alan Wake as a whole, especially since Control has basically rendered it non-canon or at least unimportant in the great scheme of things. I guess you wouldn't HAVE to play them but I think they do a good job of fleshing out Alan Wake himself as a character and completing his arc, which sort of peters out in the main game in order to wrap up the main plot.
